Birdsville Track – Mungerannie

We had a very hot 85km to cover to get to Mungerranie by lunchtime. There were golf ball sized rocks to negotiate, burning hot sand to surf the bikes and trailers through and we constantly felt that we were going uphill even though when we turned around it looked up hill in the opposite direction!

We both felt the effects of the heat exposure around 10am and the final 15km were the hardest we had ridden to date – travelling at 7kmph.

Pam and Phil at the Mungerannie Hotel fixed us up with their legendary burgers and ice cold cokes which made the day very special. We sat in the cool of the pub for a while before setting up camp next to the creek and sorting our water requirements for the three day push to Birdsville. That evening we listened to some local Aboriginal folk (track graders) as they played the guitar and sang “I can almost see Birdsville from here”.
